Since their accidental creation by the shee, grendels have been feared and despised because of their vicious natures. And yet, it hasn't always been that way.

In fact, after most of the shee left Albia, the norns found out the remaining grendels were actually quite friendly. And so, the norns became friends with the grendels. Before long, the vicious evil grendel disappeared from the face of Albia, surviving only as stowaways on the shee starship.

Several years after the shee's exodus, a small group of grendels headed for the desert island to dine on some coconuts. However, that day would mean a change in the lives of every single grendel in that group.

One youngster discovered a ball and was playing with it while the rest of his family ate and rested.

Suddenly, the ball flew over the edge and landed in the waters of the Eastern ocean, over the glass sphere that gave creatures below a good look at the world beneath the waves. The young grendel didn't know that, and thinking nothing of it, chased after the ball, splashing through the water.

Unfortunatly, the glass dome he had stepped on was slippery-and instead of getting the ball, the grendel lost his footing, slid over the dome, and disappeared beneath the waves.

The fate of the youngster didn't go un-noticed by the rest of the group. 2 of the adults went after him, only to find themselves sinking into the sea.

One by one, the group attempted to retrieve their members from beneath the sea-and found themselves in a new world.

Sadly, up to this point, grendels were not meant for the life aquatic-a few grendels drowned, while the rest attempted to swim back to shore, but only managed to get a breath of air before sliding back over the dome.

Finally, the grendels gave up trying to get back home above water. From that point forwards, this group of grendels helped each other get a breath by 'throwing' each other to the surface. They changed their diet from typical, Albian food to eating the fish and seahorses, and the occansional coconut piece that fell into the water from above.

Their biggest problem was boredom-the ball floating above them would be no fun to play with underwater, seeing as it floated. And no norn who came to the island dropped any heavy toy down for them to play with. So the grendels started playing with whatever they could find.

Over the years, they became accustomed to eating fish and coconut, and because of the limited feeding opportunities, they started to need less and less food.

Eventually, one grendel was hatched who did not need to surface for air. His slightly blueish tint also helped him get more fish than his comrades. Both of these features were passed on, morphing the grendels who fell into the sea so long ago into creatures of the ocean.

As they explored the bottoms of both seas, they passed down tales of the world above and the creatures who lived there-both of which had become nothing more than myths to them.

Until one day, many years later...

A pair of the aquatic grendels were wandering the bottom of the western ocean, searching for coconut pieces to eat. Their otherwise normal lives were interrupted by a change-in the form of the submarine, which swept them up and took them ashore.

Now, the grendels who were once introduced to the new world of the sea came onto their ancestreal home of the land. It was much diffrent from what they were used to.

Movement was much easier than it was below the surface of the sea. During their first couple minutes on land, they kept tripping because they made the big steps nessecary to get anywhere underwater. Then there was the new food-they found that not only were coconut slivers easier to get, the other foods were downright delicious, and more nutritious than the fish-and-coconut diet they had become used to.

But the biggest change of all-fear. The land above the waves, which to their ancestors was home, was now unfamilar territory. Wandering from the desert island, the grendels became more and more confused as they explored the rest of Albia.

Then the grendels finally reached the garden-and for the first time in many, many years, the ancestors of the grendels who fell into the sea met their old norn friends. Except now they weren't friends-they were creatures that frightened the ocean-goers.

The norns, however, weren't scared, and before long, the grendels of the sea lost their fear of the norns and wandered the rest of Albia with them-like their ancestors had done long ago.

From that point forward, the grendels moved freely between the land and the water-but due to their heritage, the norns christened these creaturs from the sea "Oceanic Grendels."
